Basics To Fly Fishing Gear

There are many things that you can bring with you on a fly fishing trip. The main things that you will need are the fly fishing rod and reel, along with other types of fly fishing gear that I will be covering in this article.

I will start off with the bait, which consists of flies. Flies are designed to copy live insects and there are a large variety of kinds that can use as different fish prefer different food. The types of flies that are out there are dry, nymph, popping, wet and stream flies.

The type of line you will be using also plays a big role in fly fishing. Not only do you need a certain pound test if you are fishing for bigger fish, but you will also need line that you will be able to cast efficiently. The line must also match the standards of the fly rod and reel so that you will be able to reel and cast properly.

The majority of fly fisherman will stand in the water when they are fishing, also referred to as wading. For this you will have to invest in a pair of waders, which can be extremely cheap or very expensive. You will have to decide what conditions you primarily be in when you are looking to buy a pair of waders.

On top of the waders you should also think about investing in a fishing vest. This is a convenience to store your fishing tackle in, such as flies and hooks. So if you need to change to a different type of fly in a hurry you can easily do it with out letting the fish escape.

A good pair of fishing pliers is almost a necessity. Many rivers and streams are exclusively catch and release water. That means that once you catch the fish, you need to let it go. This helps propagate the population and promote healthy fishing at all times. You will want an easy way to get the hook out of the fishs mouth without causing harm to its body. Fishing pliers are designed to do just that.

The last thing you should have as a part of your fly fishing gear is a camera, specifically a water proof camera. If you are a catch and release fisherman, as most fly fisherman are, you will want to take a picture if you are fortunate enough to catch a trophy fish.

These are by far not the only things you will need when you are fly fishing. Personal preferences will vary depending upon the person, but items that are mentioned above are the basics that you will need to begin fly fishing.
